Safehome Program

Those residents concerned about fire and safety around their home and property may be interested in the free program offered by the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service, Safehome.

This program provides personalized fire safety and general safety information for householders in their home. A request for a Safehome visit can be arranged by ringing 1300 369 003 or visiting a local fire station.

You do not have to be on a reticulated or town water scheme to be eligible.

The eligibility for applicants new to the scheme is retrospective back to 16 August on producing original receipts, verification of property ownership (rates notice) and receipts from plumbers;

  • $1000 for new rainwater tanks, inclusive of installation including pumps, diverters and slab
  • $200 for a new 4 star (or better) water rated clothes washing machine (one washing machine per household over the lifetime of the scheme)
  • $150 per suite for new dual-flush toilets suites, including installation, which will replace single flush toilets (maximum of two toilet suites)
  • 50% of purchase cost up to $200 (above ground) or $500 (below-ground) to install a greywater system
  • 50% of purchase price up to $30 per showerhead for a new 3 star (or better) showerheads (maximum of three showerheads)
  • $200 for a pool cover (minimum size 25 square metres) and/ or pool cover roller

These are the same rebates as proposed for the South East Queensland scheme.

Western Suburbs Home Assist Secure

The Western Suburbs Home Assist Secure program provides older residents and seniors with useful information about removing some of those difficulties associated with independent living, in their own home.

The service provides free information and referrals about home maintenance, falls prevention, repairs and modifications and home security. Subsidised assistance for minor home maintenance, repairs and
modifications which relate to health, safety and security, is also available for eligible clients.

The program is offered by the Churches of Christ care and funded by the Queensland Government.

Q150 - Community Funding Program

To help mark Queensland's 150th anniversary in 2009, the Queensland Government is offering local communities grants of between $2000 and $10,000 for projects and events.

These grants will be offered in three stages between now and the end of 2008 and are available to all local councils, teritary institutions, incorporated organizations and community groups.

Applications for first round offers close on 13 April.

Energy Ombudsman

For those local small businesses, householders or community groups that have concerns dealing with the electrical or gas supplier and have not been able to resolve the issue, you may wish to contact the Office of the Energy Ombudsman on 1800 662 837. The ombudsman can help to resolve many common disputes between customers and their energy supplier.
