Safety at Chapel Hill State School

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

A group of parents ask me to tour Chapel Hill State School and I was gob smacked by the incredible number of safety breaches that I saw.

Chapel Hill State School is a wonderful school that achieves great results but with a   miniscule maintenance budget it has been unable to provide either reasonable maintenance or safety.

  • Numerous trip hazards some so severe that major entries to the school were almost impassible
  • large heavy tree branches dropping regularly into children’s play areas
  • numerous sharp objects such as metal sheeting and wire protruding where children go
  • a number of steep embankments, even around prep year classrooms occupied by 5 year old children that were unfenced.
  • and most concernedly a deep culvert subject to flash flooding up to a height of around 6 meters of fast flowing water that is completely unfenced in the middle of the school play ground adjacent to playground equipment.

I raised this matter vigorously with the Minister at Estimates.  He declined my invitation to come out and inspect this for himself.

We have now a number of reports of injuries including extremely serious injuries requiring major surgery as a result of these hazards.  We will continue to urge the Government to make the school safe for our students.
