Draft SEQ Regional Plan out

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

The State Government’s draft review of the South East Queensland Regional Plan has been released.

It should be noted that it was released by media statement late on a Sunday night, three days after Parliament rose for the year.

Points to note:-

§         The Government have recognised the issues we have put forward vigorously that there should be no expansion of the urban footprint in the local area due to the completely inadequate nature of our local transport and other infrastructure.  There has in general been no expansion of the urban footprint in our area and I am pleased that circumstances in our area have been listened to.

§         The Government have opened the door to a possible future development of the Vet Farm and the CSIRO sites at Pinjarra Hills by designating them as possible Science and Technology developments which would almost certainly include urban development.

§         The Government have dramatically increased the target growth in the Ipswich area even further.

My major concern about this strategy is that it has not been accompanied by appropriate infrastructure.  The Government are now targeting an extra quarter of a million people in that region and yet their 20 year infrastructure plan does not contain a major redevelopment of the Western Freeway which is in desperate need of at least the addition of public transport bus lanes.  There is still no rail connection to the Springfield area.

It is one matter to approve the urban development of massive tracts of land for hundreds of thousands of people however the real work of Government is ensuring that those areas are appropriately serviced and at this point in time they are not.  Nor are there concrete plans in place for the infrastructure such massive development would require.
