Labor’s Education Minister has been accused of ignoring falling standards and now falling enrolments in Queensland State Schools.
LNP education and training spokesman Dr Bruce Flegg told Parliament this week that since 1998 the number of State Schools in Queensland had fallen by 62, while religious and independent schools had risen by 46.
"During the same period the number of school students in Queensland soared by more than 133,000 – but only 48 per cent of those went to State Schools," Dr Flegg said.
"It’s clear that Queensland families are voting with their feet and increasingly choosing to send their children to Catholic and independent schools.
"It’s a real shame the Minister refuses to acknowledge this trend and examine the underlying reasons behind falling enrolments in State Schools.
"Our State School system should be the backbone of education in Queensland.
"Instead, it’s being undermined by a Minister and government that are not interested in redressing poor literacy and numeracy standards."
