LNP calls for urgent release of Gonski Review
The State Opposition has called for the immediate release of the Gonski Review, saying delaying the findings until school returns this year defeats the purpose of the review.
Shadow Minister for Education Dr Bruce Flegg said the review was commissioned to better allocate funding to schools and students to ensure no students or schools were disadvantaged.
“Instead, Federal Education Minister Peter Garrett has had the Gonski Review gathering dust in his inbox since before Christmas, but won’t release it for public feedback and comment until after the 2012 school year has begun,” Dr Flegg said.
“Sitting on the results and recommendations of the report is typical of Labor government mismanagement. I call on Queensland’s Education Minister Cameron Dick to lobby Mr Garrett to release the findings immediately.
“Experts agree the current funding system is flawed and the Government’s own website about the Review states ‘The review will be transparent, open and consultative’.
So there is no reason why the government should conceal the report’s findings from the public.
“What is the government trying to hide?
“The Minister must stand up for Queensland students and their families by calling on Mr Garrett to release the report so its findings can be acted on.
“Yet again, this tired, Bligh government is captive to the political whims of its Canberra mates.
“Every day that the Bligh government remains in power is another day of lost opportunity.
“A CanDo LNP Government will work hard to improve education outcomes for all Queensland students.”
