Asbestos & our kids still ‘not a priority’ for Bligh
The Bligh government’s horrifying asbestos mis-management has again been exposed as today we learn four high school students found traces of the deadly substance in their science kits.
LNP Shadow Minister for Education Dr Bruce Flegg said this Labor Government had failed to take asbestos seriously, and the Premier’s own track record on asbestos in schools was appalling when as Education Minister in the Beattie Government, she claimed in 2005 removing asbestos in our schools 'was not a priority'.
“Labor is dangerously exposing our children to asbestos,” said Dr Flegg.
“The Bligh government should be protecting our children and ensuring their safety.
“Parents won’t buy the Bligh government’s self-indulgent claim Queensland has the most transparent asbestos guidelines, especially when they’ve been caught out again deliberately trying to hide the presence of asbestos in schools from parents,” said Dr Flegg.
“Why did the Bligh government refuse to make a public statement about the discovery of asbestos in science kits?
“It would seem Labor chose to keep the revelation under wraps to avoid adverse publicity, especially following more Queensland Health scandals including Joel Barlow’s alleged $11 million fraud.
"Students, parents and teachers deserve straight answers and confidence in a State government that will put the interests of the school community before political interests and cover-up.
“We are still seeing far too many examples of children and teachers who are exposed to potentially deadly airborne asbestos fibres.
“The claims today are another shocking indictment on the Bligh Government and proof they are content to play Russian roulette with the lives of students and teachers,” said Dr Flegg.
“The CanDo team is committed to restoring accountability in government. “We will revitalize front line services for families,” Dr Flegg said.
