Bligh government poor policies fail Queensland students

Dr Bruce Flegg MP
Shadow Minister for Education and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships
LNP Member for Moggill

24 January 2012

Bligh government poor policies fail Queensland students

The State Opposition said the final report into last year’s NAPLAN tests gives the Labor government a damning fail mark by showing Queensland students are not meeting national averages for literacy and numeracy.

“This shows that when it comes to education, Premier Bligh and Education Minister Dick talk the talk, but they can’t walk the walk,” Shadow Minister for Education Dr Bruce Flegg said.

“The report reveals that Education Queensland is bouncing along the bottom with the small states of Tasmania and South Australia with lower than national average results for literacy and numeracy across Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

“There is no excuse for this.

“Mr Dick will claim the Year 3 results improving as a personal triumph, but this is not due to his efforts. It is because 2011 was the first year Queensland students have had the same number of years in school and are similar ages to other states.

“The point still remains that despite some improvement, the results of Queensland’s year three students were still below the Australian average.”

Dr Flegg said it was clear this tired 20 year old Labor government’s inaction and policy blunders were letting down Queensland students and their families.

“The LNP will deliver a world class education system. We understand the need to get the basics right and revitalise front line services so that teachers and principals can get on with the job of education Queensland students

“Research shows many young Queenslanders are not getting the necessary numeracy and literacy skills to assist in future education and training.

“This is because they’ve missed out on the basic building blocks early on in their education. The LNP understands the need to get the basics right in the early years.

“Queensland parents and their children deserve better education standards than what they are currently getting because of the Bligh government.”

Dr Flegg said Queensland teachers do an outstanding job, but that they need more support from the government to help students achieve optimum academic results.

“A CanDo LNP Government will work hard to deliver a world class education system in Queensland. “It’s time for a change.  It’s time to get Queensland back on track.”
