Cyclists may get Moggill Road crossing
Thursday, 30 April 2009 13:21
The Department of Transport has indicated that they have reviewed the issues I raised in relation to cyclists using Moggill Road.
Currently cyclists are required to dismount and cross roads such as Pullenvale Road as it is against the law for cyclists to cross pedestrian crossings on their bike whether or not pedestrians are present.
The Transport Department appear to have accepted my proposal that cycle lanterns be installed at the intersection of the Western Freeway to allow cyclists to continue riding across Moggill Road at this point. I think this is a sensible solution given the configuration of Moggill Road and the usage patterns of it. Currently 2,000 cyclists per day use the bikeway along the Western Freeway.
The usual stumbling block of funding of course still applies. At this stage the Government are indicating it will be considered for funding following the June 30th end to this current financial year.
The Transport comment is as follows:-
As discussed it is illegal for a cyclist to ride across a pedestrian
crossing. The road regulations require cyclists to dismount and walk.
Depending on their location yellow hand rails can be used by disabled,
elderly or cyclists. In this case the hand rail is for cyclists to grab on
to for actions like unclipping their cycle shoes.
In recognition of the number of cyclists accessing this crossing and the
issue of cyclists riding across the pedestrian crossing, Main Roads has a
design plan for an alternative crossing point for cyclists (adjacent to the
pedestrian crossing) and for cycle lanterns to be installed. This design
will allow cyclists to ride across Moggill Road legally on the green 'cycle
crossing' indicator. Subject to available funding the new design may be
installed next financial year.
