Government reneges on yet another promise…

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Residents living along sections of the much maligned Moggill Road have put up with almost two years of “on again, off again” roadworks.

Now to add “insult to injury” the government has reneged on its promise to provide landscaping around the recently constructed noise barriers.

Even after just a few months the road corridor is heavily overgrown with weeds.  It will only get worse.

As far back as August 2006, plans to landscape the area were signed off on and authorised by the Department Main Roads.

Fast forward three years later and there is still not a plant or a tree in sight and residents are now being told landscaping will not proceed.

The choice by many local residents to live in the western suburbs has been prompted by the open green space and the natural beauty of the area.

‘Greening’ of, and beautifying the noise barriers would not only make them more aesthetically pleasing but would also ensure the area remains environmentally friendly  and something the community could be proud of.

The area in question remains unsightly and is becoming overgrown with weeds and without the promised landscaping the noise barriers are a target for graffiti.

Graffiti is an act of vandalism and the removal of it is an expensive and often ongoing exercise. ‘Greening’ of the noise barriers would potentially lower the risk of such vandalism therefore reducing the costs associated with its removal.

Landscaping will significantly enhance the visual amenity and I implore the government to deliver on its promise of 3 years ago.
