What will it take to get the Government to make Grandview/Moggill Road safe?

Below is yet another account from a local resident of a near and potentially fatal miss near the intersection of Grandview Road and Moggill Road.

You may be aware we have conducted a vigorous battle to get a proper crossing in this area given the clearly, extremely dangerous state of this road and the need for many people to cross it to access the bus stop.

The efforts of local residents and myself have to date drawn an acknowledgement from the Main Roads Department that this area is unsafe and that it should be considered for a pedestrian crossing and lights.  However they have indicated there is no current plan to do so because they do not want to expend the up to $1.5 million that changes to this intersection require including lights, a crossing and turn zones.

I'm desperately hoping that this will not fall on deaf ears and, before someone gets killed or maimed, something gets done about a safe pedestrian crossing at the Grandview bus stop on Moggill Road.

I almost killed someone there tonight!! A woman was crossing Moggill road and had stopped in the middle of the road to wait for traffic to pass. It was dark (about 7:15pm), she was wearing a dark coloured jacket and pants and she was looking the other way - she wasn't wearing or carrying anything reflective - with the glare of the oncoming headlights I had no chance of seeing her. By sheer chance I only spotted her at the last minute in the silhouette of the approaching headlights and I was able to swerve and avoid her in the nick of time - otherwise who knows what would have happened to her or my son and I in our car. I am horrified at the thought and the potential consequences of what could have happened.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE - we have to get something done about this crossing and SOON!

With it getting darker earlier and the weather cooling off now, pedestrians are wearing warmer, darker coloured (non-reflective) clothing and crossing in the dark after getting off the bus - the street lighting in that area is totally inadequate and there is no safe haven for pedestrians when crossing the road - it's a recipe for a fatal accident and I pray that it doesn't happen.

For the community's sake, let's get this fixed.

 Yours in hope,

This sort of comment is not unique in fact sadly it is not even rare.

I have written again to the new incoming Minister for Main Roads, Mr Craig Wallace, in relation to the urgency to get something done and have requested that he see me in relation to this.  Click here to read my letter.
