School Speed Zone Trial Extended

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

In reply to my request for the school speed zone "trial" in central Kenmore to be made permanent the Main Roads Minister has advised that the trial period will be extended to the end of the 2010 calendar year.

Once again this falls short of what I would like to see but I am pleased that the school speed zone will stay in place.

One very curious aspect of the “trial” is that the government is seeking to assess the impact of signs alone on driver behaviour around schools.  The government therefore considers that police enforcement of the speed zone would alter the outcome of their study and not give them “pure data” about the effect of signs alone.

This seems like a nonsense to me.  An important part of school speed zones throughout Brisbane has been the enforcement of them and it seems bizarre that our local area is deprived of it.

A recent police operation on the same stretch of Moggill Road appears to have resulted in a large number of tickets being issued for mobile phone and seat belt offences.  It seems bizarre that we do not want to enforce the speed limit on the same stretch of road.

Be that as it may, I am pleased to see the continuation of the school speed zone, at least for the time being.
