Kenmore School Zone to participate in vehicle activated speed warnings

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Following my continued correspondence with the Minister for Transport in relation to safety in central Kenmore, the school speed zone in central Kenmore has been chosen for illuminated speed warning signs that are activated as a vehicle approaches.

The illuminated sign will flash a speed advisory when approached by a vehicle exceeding the speed limit.

Research done in Britain by the UK Department of Transport has shown this approach to be one of the most effective at attracting driver attention and causing them to slow down.

You will recall some time ago I pointed out we had the ridiculous situation where school speed zone times varied even on roads adjacent to the same school. For example, some commencing at 7 am and others commencing at 7.30 am. The government has announced that they will be standardizing the school speed zone times and the times from the first day of Term 2 on the 10 Aril 2012 for south-east Queensland will be 7.00 am -9.00 am and 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm.

This, of course, is a common-sense approach. The previous variable school speed zone times were obviously very unfair to motorists who could easily become confused about what time the school speed zone came into force.

There was also some discussion about a fixed speed camera in Kenmore but the Government has advised this is not currently part of their planning
